1. To find a word in the corpus, type it in the contains field, type ENTER or click on 'Search'.

   For example bonjour signifie les blocs contenant le mot bonjour.

2. To search several words at a time, put a blank space between the words.

   For example bonjour bonsoir means looking for the blocks containing bonjour AND bonsoir.

3. To look for disjonctions, separate the words with bars without spaces.

   For example bonjour|bonsoir means seeking the blocks containing bonjour OR bonsoir.
   However, bon(jour|soir) is not working.

4. To search for words that follow each other, put underscores between words.

   For example brave_homme means seeking the blocks containing « brave homme ».

5. .* Seeks all alphanumeric characters, for example:
   hor.* seeks all words starting with hor;
   .*ation seeks all words ending on ation;
   hor.*_du seeks all occurrences of words starting with hor followed directly by "du", for example horloge du ou encore horreur du.
   (hor.*|hom.*)_du gives all occurrences of words starting with hor or hom, followed directly by "du" for example horreur du or also homme du.

6. If one wants to look for blocks that do not contain certain words or units, simply use the field does not contain; the search patterns are identical.

Presentation of the French-Chinese parallel corpus

Our parallel corpus is the complete novel Jean-Christophe by Romain Rolland (1866-1944) and its Chinese translation.

Jean-Christophe, containing 10 volumes, was published in 1905. Romain Rolland received in 1916 the Nobel Price of Literature of 1915. The electronic version we use is free and can be accessed on the site http://www.ebooksgratuits.com/ebooks.php.

The Chinese translation was done by Fu Lei (傅雷 , 1908 -1966). His first translation of Jean-Christophe [containing three of the original's volumes: « l'Aube », « le Matin », and « l'Adolescent »] was published in January 1937 by the Business Editing House (商务印书馆 ). The rest of the novel was translated and published during the four following years.

Fu Lei was not satisfied with his own translation and retranslated the whole text. The Pingming Editing House (平明出版社) published the retranslation in the years 1952 and 1953. The electronic version comes from the site http://www.yifan.net/yihe/novels/foreign/yhklsdf/klsdf.html, but we have corrected many imperfections of this file, following the 1998 versioin published by Anhui Literature Editing House (安徽文艺出版社), the latter being based on Fu Lei's 1957 complete retranslation collected by the People's Literature Editing House (人民文艺出版社).

In order to give easier access to the information contained in the original text, we have changed all upper case letters into lower case. The Chinese word segmentation is done with the ICTCLAS, Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Lexical Analysis System, at http://www.nlp.org.cn/project/project.php?proj_id=6 - Moreover, we changed most Chinese punctuation signs into occidental symbols in order to facilitate the comparison between the original and its translation. However, some symbols that don't have an occidental counterpart where left in their original form.

The alignment of the French and Chinese texts was done with the Alignator (written by Kim Gerdes, http://elizia.net/alignator/alignator.cgi).
